Artist: ALPHA
Title: The Sky Is Mine
Format: 2CD (double CD)
Label: Cat'n Roof Records [ info {at} catnroof {dot} com ]
First of all I'd like to point out that Alpha's music isn't my cup of tea at all. I'm not into lushy electronic music with soul components (I can't find a better way to explain it, even if sometimes it remembers me a sort of mellow version of Portishead) and I'm not into Massive Attack either (Alpha released something on their label). This double CD contains twenty four tracks where the sensual whispered voice of Wendy Stubbs enrich the electronic soul melodies performed by Corin Dingley. Fortunately for me there are also tracks I liked where the duo showed a little of their dark side (like on "Brood", "Push" or "Burn me again") and I also dug some instrumental experiments which were mixing jazz and electronics and some of the six remixes but they are too classy. If you are into these sounds I must admit that they are good...

This two-disc set marks just over ten years since {$Alpha} first exploded
onto the indie techno-trip-pop scene with {^Come from Heaven}, which was
released under the aegis of {$Massive Attack} on what was then their
brand-new {@Melankolic} label. If you liked {$Alpha} then you'll probably
still like them now, though if this marks your first exposure to their music
you may find yourself wondering what all the fuss is about. The group is a
duo comprised of {$Colin Dingley} and {$Wendy Stubbs}; {$Stubbs} provides
all the vocals, and her voice is often the most attractive thing about the
songs -- it's dark in tone but not too murky, and light in texture without
being fluffy. The songs themselves are okay, but they mostly seem like
variations on the same theme, and the variations don't vary much: {&"Burn Me
Again"}, {&"Given Time"}, {&"May"}, and {&"For the Wages"} are all dark and
quiet and not terribly interesting. {&"Stargazing"} evokes 1960s pop in a
good way, while {&"Surely"} does the same in a slightly seasick way. The
album's best track, {&"Home"}, starts out unpromisingly with a desultory and
out-of-tune piano, but then slowly builds in intensity and interest. The
second disc is more interesting, mainly because half of it consists of
beefed-up remixes of songs from the regular program (the other half is bonus
tracks which are also, ironically enough, mostly more interesting than the
main album). Overall, this is a worthy addition to the band's catalog but
probably not a must-have for anyone except diehard fans.
This review will be carried shortly by the All-Music Guide.

review of 'Without Some Help
ALPHA Without Some Help CD (Don't Touch)
Alpha is the electronic project of Corin Dingley, who produced James Roberts' solo album Everything You Know Is Right. James appears here along with an assortment of big names like Coldplay, Jarvis Cocker and Massive Attack. This album is a collection of tracks either remixed by Alpha or collaborations between Alpha and other artists. The tracks range from retro-futuristic electronica with experimental undertones to commercial soul/pop to tracks with massive orchestral arrangements. The tendency to combine a 'big' production sound and music with mainstream appeal with undergroundy and experimental elements is one that works well.
If James Roberts' solo album came as a surprise to anyone familiar with his former bands The Sea Urchins and Delta, then his collaboration with Alpha here will do so even more. Hope Goes Blind is a very commercial soul/pop/electronic track, very unlike anything he's done before, but as is usual with Alpha, the mainstreamness of the song is offset by the addition of rather more adventurous forms of electronica. There's strings, samples and electronic burblings underlying the song and it all sounds pretty impressive. The tune is also amazingly catchy.
I'm not familiar with the original version of Acid Casuals' Bowl Me Over, but the remix here is very innovative, packed full of strange squeaky electronic noises and what sounded for a brief moment like orchestral kettle drums. Alpha and Jarvis Cocker appear here with a cover of Jimmy Webb's This is Where I Came In - sounds very classy, with a huge orchestral arrangement. The collaboration with Wendy Stubbs is another cover, this time Tim Buckley's Song to the Siren. This combines breathy vocals with ambient and orchestral instrumentation - very inventive and impressive. Alpha's remix of Blueneck's LE:465 wraps an understated vocal in enormous swathes of ambient sound.
James Roberts appears again with Yeah So, which originally appeared on his album Everything You Know Is Right. The song itself is early 70s rock in the style of the earlier output of James' former band Delta, but arrangement-wise it brings in a whole host of electronic burblings, orchestral bits and samples, very unlike anything heard from either of James' previous bands.
